The Fall of Singapore No. 1

I'll never forget the City

The day that Singapore fell

The way the enemy shelled it

Was nothing but misery and hell

-o-

Everyone did their bit in the battle

Nobody was to blame

Only the people that started the trouble

To receive greater pay and champagne

-o-

It was easy to give all the orders

And tell someone else what to do

But what about us poor soldiers

Fighting on biscuits and stew

-o-

They tried all they could to protect us

To save what they could is the state

But we know the Air Force had left us

So we gave in before it meant fate

-o-

They thought of the women and children

And made peace for them all

That was why the white flag was hoisted

Which meant that the City did fall

-o-

So into the town like mad men

Came the Nipons on the following day

They took all our homes and our comforts

And arranged for our escort away

-o-

We went to our place of internment

We smiled whatever they gave

We left remembering our brave ones

Asleep in their peaceful graves

-o-

We know we had one great creator

Who witnessed the wrong that was done

Who will stand by our side in the trouble

Until our freedom and battle is won.
