The prisoners cage at SANDAKAN measured 4' x 4' x 4' with a small door one side. Constructed of wooden bars (2"x 1"). Prisoners in the SANDAKAN were not given a morning or evening

meal or allowed to bathe, but were sent on the usual flying field work and were fed at nid-day only. Periods in the cage ranged from 5-14 days, according to the seriousness of the

"crime" committed. No bedding or blankets were allowed while undergoing punishment. The I.J.A. Cmdr. of the Camp awarded these punishments. Officers who offended in any way were made to stand to attention in the office of the I.J.A. for a period up to 3 days.

SANDAKAN AERODROME

Appearing as Apnendix 1 is an annotated mosaic of SANDAKAN A/D and town, from photogranhs taken on 24 Oct 44, representing the first coverage of this area. The following third phase interpretation is necessarily incomplete and subject to amendment as sections of the A/D are cloud covered.

(a) Suumary

SANDAKAN A/D is five miles NW of SANDAKAN Tovm and comprises two runways both serviceable. The A/D is under construction, and, when completed, its strategic position and facilities will determine it as a major air base. Twenty-Two aeroplanes can be seen through clouds, and possibly a few mere may be present. Extensive construction activity is progressing on dispersal lanes and bays, and upon completion will accommodate a considerable number of airplanes. a special note of interest is a cluster of buildings surrounded by a well used road 3/4 ml SW of the WNW end of No 1 runway. Constructed on the ground in what appears to be concrete are the letters P.O.W. This could possibly be a PW camp, but the absence of barracks buildings in the area other than those mentioned, suggest that possibly enemy personnel are in occupation. Roads in the area are well constructed and appear to be used to a great extent. Shipping activity is visible in SANDAKAN Hbr; the largest vessel is a Fox Tare Dog, 200' long. Two ships are under construction in the shipyards, approximately 120' long.

(b) LOCATION

    (i) SANDAKAN A/D is five mls NW of SANDAKAN Town,

(ii) Distance and direction in nauticol mls to nearest allied and enemy base
