APPENDIX 1.

"KINGFISHER" PROJECT

TRANSPORT IMPLICATION FOR THE INTELLIGENCE PARTY

I. BY CATALINA:

1: After consultation with D/Air, the following areas have been chosen, subject to photographic recce, as suitable for a Catalina landing during the N.E. Monsoon:-

    • The deep water stretches NORTH and SOUTH of PULO TINBANG (Inner SANDAKAN Harbour).
    • The INNER Bay area WEST of PULO TINBANG, which, though unsurveyed and uncharted, may be considered a feasible landing area on the results of photographic reconnaissance.
    • The deep water Channel between Tg PANDARUS (Lat. 6 03' N. Long. 118 E) and LIBARRAN Is.

2: D/Air suggests that diversionary raids by preferably Catalinas with desynchronized motors, should be made on SANDAKAN to cover the landing and take - off times of the Catalina hearing the Intelligence Party.

II. BY SUBMARINE:

There is a good dropping point 5 miles N.E. of BO-AAN Island (Lat. 6 17' N. Long. 118 04' E) on the 20 fathom line. From this position the submarine will be approx. 30 nautical miles from Radar at SANDAKAN and will be screened from it by the group of islets SOUTH of BO-AAN Is.

From BO-AAN Island, the party can make its way by 10-man Rubber boats to the WEST side of Tg PANDARUS to a hideout in the GUM GUM River.

The feasibility of transporting the Intelligence Party by this method will depend, owing to the N.E. monsoon, on the month in which the party is to be inserted.

III. BY LIBERATOR:

    • Two Liberators will be required to carry the party and stores.
    • It is considered that the chance of the members of the party being able to find each other or their storpedoes after a night drop in the heavily wooded and completely unsurveyed hinterland of SANDAKAN is extremely small.

It is therefore not considered that a Liberator drop is a suitable means of ineerting the party into the area.
