ROAD S 2 SANDAKAN - BERHALA DARAT (BULI SIM SIM Road)

This road runs EAST from Raod S 1, ml .25. On leaving SANDAKAN town it runs along the coast; on the landward side the ground rises steeply to the BUKIT SIM SIM. ridge, with heights of 300 ft within 100 yds of the road.

Details on construction, condition, etc are not known, but it is reported to be metalled.

ROAD S 3 SANDAKAN  - Road S 1 ml 5.88. (LEILA and SIBUGA Roads)

(a) Classification

B, under 5 tons (5 ton in town area).

(b) Factors affecting classification

Stone seems available for metalling throughout, which would upgrade the road for its earth stretches.

(c) General description of road

This road forms an alternative to part of Route S 1.

(d) Terrain alongside road

The road runs along the coast WESTwards froin SANDAKAN skirting hills for 2.13 mls, then climbs into low hills with scrub and trees.

(e) Sharp turns and gradients

Hairpin bends and gradients at 2,13 ml.

(f) Construction and Condition

The road appears to be a metalled road with some surface treatment, It is wide enough for two lines of traffic. There is no evidence as to its load capacity but. would appear not to warrant loads of over 5 tons on the metalled stretches.

(g) Availability of road material

Quarries of BULI SIM SIM Road (whinstone) and on BERHALA Island at the entrance to the harbour, also an unlocated quarrry on this route.
