7. RAILWAYS
In SANDAKAN area there was reported in 1942 to be a narrow gauge line running about 8 mls into the jungle from SANDAKAN for the purpose of hauling timber to the port.
There were also logging railways (2 ft 0 in gaugö) belonging to the British Borneo Timber Company in the area of the BETTOTAN, SEGALIUD, SAPAGAYA and SUANLAMBA rivers, and also further SOUTH in the SIMPORNA area, on the SW sidoe of DARVEL Bay(about 40 mls from SANDAKAN).

(a) Strength -
(b) Defensive Posns - No one is allowed up the harbour beyond a line drawn direct from the Jetty to the opposite shore. One light AA posn was observed near the Japanese Cemetery, on hill behind FORT PRYER.
(c) Supplies - Main source of supplies is USUKAN, KÜDAT PLAINS and JESSELTON. Food posn here reported to be very bad arid food is rationed
(d) PW Camp - This is situated at the 8th nile, close to the drone.
(e) Dromes - a large airfield is situated at 8th ml NW of SANDAKAN
