Resume of the Superintendent’s address (Oct 10th 1942)
You prisoners of war, when I heard that all of you cancelled your drill in order that you might attend the funeral service of late Sapper Smith, I perceived that all of you were in mourning and at the same time my deepest sympathy was with you. However, on that same day, someone requested for a permission to hold an entertainment, which of course was astonishing to me, because I thought that all of you were in the state of mourning as one of his family. Therefore, in order to check my curiosity, I went around your huts. There to my surprise, I found that none of the things stated in the regulations have been put into practice. I expected you to have everything in order by this time, however, my opinion toward you have suddenly changed which is regrettable.
In order to fulfill my duties, I must demand that you strictly obey the following matter. First of all, a salute must be strictly practiced as the Japanese Army.
