iii. GENERAL ASSUMPTIONS CONCERNING MAIN PLAN:

    a. In the planning of this operation it would appear that there are three unusual factors arising out of the special type of target to be attacked, which have to be taken into account:-

    • The physical condition of the P/W which is likely to make evacuation difficult.
    • The attack must be timed to coincide with the concentration of the P/W in the Camp,
    • The Japanese must be allowed as little time as possible to remove or massacre the P/W.

    b. For the purpose of arriving at the part which S.R.D. should play in the proposed project, the airborne opération as a whole is divided into three phases:-

Phase 1. The dropping of the Parachute Bn.

Phase 2. The neutralisation of enemy defences and counter-measures and the release of the P/W.

Phase 3. The withdrawal of the P/W and attacking troops.

    c. It is assumed that:-

    • The primary objectives for the Parachute Bn. will be as follows:-
    • The P/W Camp Area
    • The Airfield.
    • The road junction KABON CHINA ROAD - SIBUGA ROAD.
    • W/T Receiving Stn. and barracks near the golf course.
    • SANDAKAN town area and Tg. PAPAT.

    d. Possible methods of withdrawal for the P/W and attacking troops are as follows:-

    • By L.C.I.'s from the wood wharf on SIBUGA River to an L.S.I. lying off SHALLOW BAY.
    • By transport or cruiser from the Govt. wharf in SANDAKAN Harbour.

iv. It is considered that the following information is essential before the operation can be planned in detail:-

    a. FOR PHASE 1:

    • Confirmation that the known D.Z.'s are suitable. *
    • Information concerning any other suitable D.Z.'s near the above objectives. *
    • Types and number of aircraft on the airfield. *
    • Positions and détails of A/A defences and searchlights. *
    • Position of enemy Radar. *
    • Positions and details of enemy defence posts, patrol routes and troop concentrations. *
    • Times when P/W will be concentrated in camp. *
